Learn about how animal advocates fought for "Desmonds Law"

Press Conference on Desmond's Law Connecticut H.B. 6187 with Representative Diana Urban. (May 26, 2015).

Court-Appointed Advocate Programs

With the passage of the innovative “Desmond’s Law” in 2016, Connecticut became the first state to allow legal advocates to testify on behalf of animal victims in cruelty and neglect cases. Although some states allow victims’ or children’s advocates to testify in cases involving humans, this law is groundbreaking in that it is the first to allow advocates to act in a similar capacity for animals.

Desmond's Bill: Testimonies

"Desmond’s Law acknowledges animal cruelty as a precursor to socially violent behavior and has become a necessity in this disturbing climate. New Jersey now has the opportunity to become a forerunner heeding the warning signs with DESMOND’S Law."

Find out about the Pets for Life Program

Pets for Life (PFL)(HSUS)

PFL takes a comprehensive, long-term approach to address the inequity in and lack of access to pet resources people experience in underserved communities through door-to-door community outreach and pet owner support services. Providing free veterinary care, supplies, services and information to pet owners, the program builds trust and positive relationships within the communities that are served as opposed to staying on the periphery. Assessment of the dog breeding industry in Kathmandu Valley – a report by Animal Nepal, 2021

"In Nepal, most breeders are small backyard operations but there are a growing number of ‘dog farms’, especially outside the Ring Road in Kathmandu valley. "In Nepal, most breeders are small backyard operations but there are a growing number of ‘dog farms’, especially outside the Ring Road in Kathmandu valley. With the main motive being financial profit, the dog breeding industry thrives on cruelty, abuse, and exploitation of dogs as well as other pet animals. In Nepal, for some people, owning a certain dog has become synonymous with being fashionable not knowing that their personal preferences for certain breeds lead to severe health and behavioral issues in these dogs. Furthermore, each time someone opts to buy a newly bred pup, the lives of homeless pups born on the streets are compromised. Many people buy dogs like Huskies in a city like Kathmandu where temperatures can reach the high 30s in the summer, which inevitably leads to health issues resulting in costly veterinary treatment, which can in many cases lead to the abandonment or neglect of the dogs. At Animal Nepal’s dog treatment center, we receive at least one case of abandoned/surrendered purebred dogs per week and in most cases, the dogs come to us in an extremely poor state of health."

Pramada Shah, President Animal Nepal.

"The Animal Welfare Network Nepal in the winter of 2008 conducted a survey into people’s perceptions of pet and stray animals in Kathmandu Valley. Six different teams interviewed a total of 656 individuals (297 pet owners and 359 community members) in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur District. The findings call for immediate intervention by government authorities, civil society and the public at large. Although there are some positive developments in the lives of Kathmandu’s owned dogs (some 90% of pets reportedly receive vaccinations, dog owners increasingly are inclined to take their pet to a vet when it is sick and like to spend time with them), the overall situation of both pet and stray dogs in Kathmandu Valley is a grim one. 64% of pets are kept on a chain, of whom 36% on a very short one. Pets die at a young age, possibly due to general neglect and a lack of awareness on canine health. Only 17% receive some kind of family planning. This is a great cause for concern as offspring tend to be abandoned on the street, further increasing the stray dog population."

If you do decide to purchase a dog from a breeder make sure that they screen for serious health issues in the dogs they breed.

"Reputable pure-breed dog breeders understand the value and importance of following the AKC breed guidelines for health testing. Early detection of hereditary conditions in breeding pairs and family pets is important, as it can allow for early surgical intervention, weight and exercise management plans, or treatment plans to manage a cond

"Reputable pure-breed dog breeders understand the value and importance of following the AKC breed guidelines for health testing. Early detection of hereditary conditions in breeding pairs and family pets is important, as it can allow for early surgical intervention, weight and exercise management plans, or treatment plans to manage a condition if/when it develops.

The following are some of the more commonly recommended tests that apply to a wide range of breeds. There are more tests than we can easily go into here, but we recommend you become informed on breed-specific tests if you are looking for a pure-breed dog. These tests are also routinely recommended for rescues, and non-pure-breed dogs for the same reasons – early indicators of potential disease, or treatable conditions."

ANIMAL CRUELTY

Learn about "the link" between animal cruelty and human violence. An extensive amount of research over the years has shown that there is a link between animal cruelty and violence against humans (domestic violence, child abuse and other forms of family violence). Little research exists on the topic of cruelty towards street dogs. It is an area that is ripe for investigation.
